Goodbye billable hour
While researching for my business school-style class on how to run a professional services firm, I came across this fantastic blog: Gruntled Employees. It's run by Jay Shepherd, head of the Shepherd Law Group here in Boston -- a firm with NO BILLABLE HOURS. He writes about billing, but also about law and management in general. Looks like it hasn't been updated in a while, but the posts there are worth reading if, like me, you like the idea of working at a firm but don't want to measure your life in six-minute increments.

I worked with a firm that billed mostly flat fee and it had just as many problems.... : (, the managing partner would bid low and then be irritated that you spent most of the month doing work already billed and then you would have to explain why billing numbers looked low, even though you were busy. Also the partners at the flat fee firm was much more aware of how much time I spent in the office. At my firm now as long as I am billing no one cares about face time. Maybe other flat fee firms are better...
