Small K moments

We've been trying to teach K not to throw food on the floor. Today at dinner, every time he didn't want something, he handed it to me. I was proud of him. He did fling a piece of pasta across the table, but I'll give him one freebie. Besides, it didn't hit the ground.

He was eating beans and I don't think he liked them. The first time he put one in his mouth, I clapped and said, "Yay! You ate a bean!" (He has been a little picky lately.) Each time he tried a bean after that, he would chew on it for a moment, make a face, extract the rest of the bean from his mouth, put in in my hand, and then clap for himself.

He has started a phase of handing me things. This morning at the park, he pulled the petals off a dandelion and put them in my hand. That was charming. This afternoon in the driveway, he found a dead bug and put it in my hand. That was sort of like having a cat.

We went for a walk in the stroller when we got home. I normally pop him in the Beco but it was hot and I thought he'd be more comfortable if he weren't strapped to me. I don't remember the last time I used the stroller. It was strange not being able to see him. I felt like I was on a walk by myself. He didn't say a word the entire time, except when I stopped the stroller to go around and say hi to him. Usually, on our walks, he points out all the flags and cars and trucks and flowers and birds that we see. Maybe he wasn't sure if I was there. I didn't realize I had grown so attached to babywearing, but the stroller walk today felt like when I gave K his first bottle after nursing -- a feeling of separation that I didn't like.

Tonight I left right after bathtime and went to a book club that a friend organized. K cried when I said goodbye.
"He was inconsolable when you left," said JW. "Until he found the rotary cheese grater. That was a good enough substitute for you."
"I'm glad to know that if something happens to me, he has a mother figure."

Speaking of cat like behavior from children...

Once, when my little brother was a toddler, he was out playing in the yard, when he found a dead squirrel. It'd been there a while, apparently, as rigor mortise had set in. This had not deterred him, as he held it in his hand swinging it around, yelling, "Mom! Mom! Look, I caught a squirrel!! Can I keep it?!!"

LOL- a roatary cheese grater? That's so funny. It's amazing what can capture the attention of little ones :)

hahaha- I love the bean clapping and charming then cat-like behavior. He sounds so adorable- well I know he's physically adorable, but his personality seems so cute too. I wish Boston and Chicago were closer- I'd love for our little guys to meet!

And congrats on finishing semester #5!!
