Early bar prep thoughts

I'm not taking the bar until next summer, thanks to a lovely university-wide policy that restricts official graduation dates to March, June, or November, rendering me ineligible for the February bar. But I'm thinking about it now because at the end of the summer, I'll have to talk with my firm about taking time off for the bar.

So here's what I'm thinking: do Micromash + PMBR, and try to borrow someone's Bar/Bri books to supplement. Then I can do most of it on my own time. Maybe ask to work a reduced schedule starting in June, and take two weeks off in July before the bar? Does that sound reasonable? Any thoughts are appreciated.

(by the way: if you're wondering why Micromash instead of Bar/Bri, it's because I think the study method will work much better for me -- I tend to fall asleep in lectures and zone out when I'm listening to audiobooks. I think it'll be okay. I have a friend who's doing it this year and will see how it goes with her, but reviews on the web I've seen have been generally positive, at least about the MBE part. Advice on this is welcome too.)

I can't believe Harvard does that - I wonder if it's pregnancy discrimination? Does the law school have to do what undergrad does?

I'm doing the same thing as you but at Berkeley and a year behind (I just started my 2.5L summer associatedship), and fortunately I'll be taking the February 2010 bar ...

wow I never heard of Micromash, I'll have to look into it. It's smart to start planning so early!

Hey, good luck with the bar stuff. Just do what they tell you, and practice the questions, and you'll be fine.

Having some extra time to prepare for it could end up being a really good thing!

I don't know anything about MicroMash, but I'm doing the barbri self study iPod option. I've heard good things about it from other people who used it last summer. It's just an iPod pre-loaded with the previous sessions audio lectures. You can also attend any classes you want, which I think I'll do a few times for the more complicated stuff or just to keep me on track. My firm covers it and while it was necessary given that bar/bri classes already started and my law school is still in session, I'm happy for the conflict because I prefer to study on my own schedule (or more accurately, on Landon's schedule :). Now I just need to dig up some long lost self-discipline...
