First day back

Yesterday we just had registration and OCI orientation, which was actually useful. I also went to a Boston headhunter presentation, which wasn't very useful: she just seemed to repeat the same large firms over and over. I was hoping to hear about places I might not have considered otherwise. She was also pretty condescending when I asked her a lifestyle question. I said that I knew average billables didn't vary that much from firm to firm, but that some firms were more flexible about when and where you complete those hours, and asked which those were. She insisted that all firms are more or less the same, and said she knows it seems like a lot of hours, but everyone manages, and if I want a reduced schedule I should forget it as a first-year, but maybe after a few years I might get married and think about having a family and by that time I might be in a better position. Not what I asked, and as for all firms being the same, I know it's not true.

Bidding starts today. I feel pretty laid-back about the whole process; I already have a good job offer for next summer, I have a list of 8-10 firms, and I'm pretty confident I'll get a job with at least one of the firms I'm targeting. So much less stressful than last year.

Today I had my first class, Bankruptcy. First impressions: Elizabeth Warren totally lives up to the hype. It's hard not to like a professor who's so passionate about the subject. She's funny, quick, and persuasive about why studying bankruptcy is important. She also lived up to the hype in another way: I got called on, along with more than half the class.

Today I also met my WLA "little sis," who had Warren for Contracts in the morning. Apparently Warren's approach in her 1L classes is a bit different: she walked right in, didn't introduce herself or say a word about the class, and immediately called on someone to explain what the first word of the case meant. The first word was "assumpsit." Ouch. The guy didn't know, and the poor 1Ls were all terrified. I told this story to someone in my section, who said she did the same thing last year.

(P.S. - unrelated and stolen from Althouse, but stunning news nevertheless - Mice hate cheese!)
